Policies limited to 7000 miles. **17.02.14 - confirmed have to be over 40yo**
May 2012 - Just got a quote and it included 6 track days with the same conditions as above. As of 2012, Aviva (CCI's underwriter) are heavily loading premiums for anyone that requires "commuting" cover, be sure to mention if you dont need it.
Will mirror NCB from other cars - no need to transfer your NCB to the vehicle insured with them. Check terms with Heritage. Spoke to on 11/1/2012 and refused to quote on Elise, saying they dont really deal with these any more. 25 Sept 2015 - Martin no longer there, struggle to insure newer cars, quoted £2k+ for V6 Exige (v's approx. £500 elsewhere)
Seemed concerned about whether they would be able to cover a V6 Exige with value in excess of £40k.
Cannot provide cover if you've had a fault claim in the last 12 months. 5-Oct-2017 - called for a quote on Exige V6 S Roadster and told that due to recent changes cannot insure Exiges anymore due to insurance group 92.
As of 22/11/11, mileage limited to 7500 (now 5000?) miles per annum for Lotus policies. As of 08/02/12 Matthew confirmed that unlimited policies are available. As of 2012, Aviva are heavily loading premiums for anyone that requires "commuting" cover, be sure to mention if you dont need it though Matt is on the ball and will almost certainly ask you. (Tyrex) - I spoke to Henderson today (4/1/13) who confirmed that the maximum annual mileage for their policies was 6000. 17.02.14 - maximum mileage is now 4500pa! 7/7/17 - Maximum mileage is now 5,000pa.

October 2017: the good news is that my quote was very very cheap. The bad news is they use a company called ERS which if you Google it has the most AWFUL reviews. So it's fine as long as you never claim!
Discounts for driver training. Happy to quote for Lotus too, very friendly/helpful. Target profile is primarily second car or low mileage (5K) drivers, werent competitive (for me) on a 9K miles policy. Well worth a try if you fit their profile though. Offer multi-car policies and unlimited track days. Honda transplants will exceed their bhp mod limit.
Days with non-ATDO track day companies are not covered, however Lotus on Track have recently joined ATDO.
Need to be over age of 25 for a policy (confirmed as of 17/12/2015)

Hello All,

Over a period of time the cable which keeps the front of your soft top roof attached can
corrode and break. It took five years for mine to do this, but depending how you store
your car it could happen before or after this time.

Step 1

Order the following part from your local Lotus Dealership : B116V0064H
( mine cost around £32 )

Step 2

Undo the old broken cable ( see picture ) you will need to open up the glued fabric
around the side supports and use a small allen key to release. Turn the key anti-clockwise.

Step 3

Insert the new Cable.. The original cables had adjustable tensioners, now unfortunately these are non-adjustable, so find the smallest end and insert it into the drivers side gap, there
are two ways of doing this..

(i) Use your original broken cable and tie string around that and the new cable, use pliers
to keep the seam taught and drag through slowly until the small new cable has come through the other side.

(ii) if you old cable has broken in the middle you will need to remove this altogether.
You will need to thread some strong string through the seam.

I used the Carbon Fibre Struts from my kite ( binded with gaffer tape ) and a bit of string attached to it, so i could get the string through.

Once through, tie the string to the end of the new cable and slowly ease through the seam.

By the way.. this is a PIG of a job.. so do it slowly until the cable is fully through.

DO NOT BIND THE OLD CABLE WITH THE NEW ONE WITH A BIT OF GAFFER TAPE...( Gaffer tape is great stuff.. but not that fantastic ) in my case this lead to the gaffer tape breaking half way through and leaving a wedge of tape in the middle of the seam ( See Picture on NOT how to do it ).

String is your friend, use a good knott and progressively pull through and you will be fine.

I used a slightly different approach, helped by Lotus putting an adjuster back into the cable. On my new ones (bought May 2022), it's at the end not in the middle as with the original fitment.

I couldn't get the plate with the allen key hole into the cable channel in my soft top - the channel was too narrow. This meant, I couldn't use the old cable to pull the new one through. So, removed the old cable completely and then unscrewed the adjuster from the end of the new cable.

To keep the channel open, I pushed a long bicycle allen key in from the other end, but you could use a dowel, a kite strut (as above) etc.

I was able to get the cable into the channel but then found that the rubber collar was binding on the fabric. I wrapped the end of the cable and the collar in parcel tape, which was the smoothest and shiniest thing to hand. This worked really well and allowed the cable and the collar to slide through the channel easily. Just keep the end of the allen key as close to the end of the cable so the channel doesn't collapse.

Once the cable is through, re-attach the plate to the adjuster.

4. Tighten the Bolts with the Allen Keys make sure that the bolts are facing towards you.

All Done, Stick the Fabric by the roof bars back down with glue and re-apply the roof to the car !

On my new ones, it's at the end not in the middle as with the original fitment.

Ever wanted variable intermittent on your wipers? Ever get annoyed that every time you wash the screen, the wipers smear it 4 times? Well you can fix both of these things by changing the wash/wipe relay. Also applies to Exige V6, and 350 Sport. (Be sure to change the lower relay not the upper Flasher relay on the 350 Sport)

Sourcing the improved relay
Various part numbers have been put forward as replacements. Obtaining new relays is possible but the majority can be found from the local breakers yard:
* Beru: 0 900 301 082
* Kostal: 377 955 531
* Bosch: 0 986 335 058
* VW: 3B0955531 ................. has 197 printed on the top, info from Audi/VW dealer - replaces VW: 357 955 531 (type 99 below)
* www.gsfcarparts.com pt no 93610
* OPEL 12 38 550
* SAAB 85 53 463
* VW 191 955 531 ................. believed to be the standard type 19 relay
* VW 357 955 531 ................. the type 99 relay
* VW 321 955 531 A ............... (sourced one from theairflowmetercompany on ebay and it didnt do anything different, had no VW logo, just part number and circuit diagram printed on it, possibly a duff clone)
* LIEBHERR 1 001 443 3
* JOHN DEERE AZ 49 989
* HAKO 90-35730-2
* KRAMER 100 010 51 46
* HYMER 0416073
* Hella 5WG 003 620-021
* Use these part numbers at your own risk!
* Some certainly aren't quite the correct relays, some are!!

MK3 Golf
One of the replacement relays known to work is from the MK3 Golf.

VW part no. 3B0955531 works, has 197 printed on top. Costs £30.97+VAT new.

Going price from a breakers yard is around £5. Most breakers yards will have a number of Mk3 golfs, and the correct relay can also be found in lots of different VWs (usually the higher spec cars) dating from the mid '90s. In the golf, the relays (and fuses) are behind a plastic panel under the steering wheel, above the drivers footwell. You can just pull the relay out.

There are two common relays you'll find in the cars. The WRONG one has the number '19' printed on the top of it in big white numbers. This is really no different from the original lotus relay, and no upgrade at all. The CORRECT relay has the number '99' or '197' printed on it. This is what you need to find. The '99' or '197' relay is usually found in higher spec cars, and the '19' relay in lower spec cars.

Known not to work: MEYLE Wipe Wash Interval Relay 100 830 0014 MK3 . This part is listed as a replacement for Bosch 0 986 335 058 and for VW 330955531.

Fitment
The relay is situated up underneath the dashboard in the passenger footwell of the Elise. It takes approximately 30 seconds to change it, no tools required, although some gymnastic ability is helpful!

To fit it, you need to get your head down into the footwell looking up at the back of the dash-front. Up there (as shown above) are a couple of relays. Pull out the one which looks the right shape, and check that the pin pattern is the same. Push in the '99' relay and the job's done. If you're unsure which relay is for the indicators and which is for the wipers, turn on the hazard lights. You'll be able to hear the indicator relay working.

Now when you wash the screen, it'll wipe just twice, and you'll have variable intermittent.

To use the Variable intermittent, flick the wiper stalk to wipe the screen once. Then wait for period of time "x" and put the stalk to intermittent setting. The intermittent delay between wipes will now be "x".
Easy.

If you drive a lot of twisty country roads you may have found that the JUMBO sized OEM rear view mirror gets in the way, obscuring a lot of the view out of the windscreen.

__TOC__

Daewoo mirror
A cheap alternative is to fit the mirror from a daewoo matiz (funny wee 3 cylinder shopping trolly, i'd guess most big scrappys would have a few crashed ones. - my local breaker in Glasgow had 5 today.

The pic shows the new one in place above and the old one below in comparison. - it doesn't look like an enormous difference in size, but it makes a BIG difference when you're driving the car!

This mod works for S1s and early S2s. These rear view mirrors have their ball joints in the centre of the back of the mirror.
The mod does not work for 111Rs and S2 exiges. These have their ball joints on the top of the mirror.
I don't know if it works for later K-engined S2s.

Instructions :

# Remove lotus mirror, by sliding the whole thing (including its stalk) upwards towards the top of the windscreen. - it just slides up leaving a small flat mounting plate in place on the windscreen.
# Remove the mirror from the stalk by popping the "ball and socket" joint out of joint, - just angle it too far in any direction forcably.
# Find a Daewoo Matiz in a scrappy. - don't bother trying to remove the stalk and all from the windscreen (i couldn't manage), just dislocate the ball and socket joint in the same way. Just take the mirror leaving the stalk behind.
# Put the new mirror face down on something soft like your seat, put the ball on the end of your Lotus stalk into the socket of the Daewoo mirror and shove downwards HARD until it clicks into place. If this proves tough to do, place the arm with the ball-end in your freezer overnight, and the mirror assembly in a warm place (on a radiator worked for me). The small shrinkage in ball, and small expansion & softening of socket makes the operation a bit easier.
# Slide the whole thing back onto the windscreen mounting.

Bingo!

Mine cost me all of £3!!! It works a treat. Much improved visibility, and you retain the lever on the bottom to "dip" the mirror.

Notes

It seems the s1 mirror was changed at some stage - my '98 s1 has a small matiz-sized mirror fitted as standard.

The "big" OEM mirrors are ~235mm wide at widest point, the "small" OEM mirrors are about 205mm - measure yours first before you go rooting about in a scrap yard!

The Matiz mirror mount that I picked up from a scrappy was attached with a grub screw similar to the OEM Elise mount. It fits directly onto the 'lozenge' on the S1 windscreen and leaves the mirror around the same position as the OEM mount in its lowest position. If you normally move the OEM mirror to it's highest position you'll find that the Matiz mount leaves it obscuring the view through the windscreen a little, but it's another option you don't want to split the mirror ball/socket.

Golf 2 mirror
Addition by Friso:
There is some confusion about which kind of mirror is fitted to which cars, I suppose...
At least my 2004 S2 111S had a GM mirror with the ball joint on top of the mirror. It is a whopping 260mm wide...

Anyway: I've found a Golf 2 mirror (part no. E1 0010012) to fit quite nicely. This mirror is even smaller than a Deawoo Matiz mirror and, more importantly, it fits on cars that have mirrors which have their ball joint on top.

<gallery>
Image:VW_compare.jpg|GM and VW comparison.
Image:VW_in_situ.jpg|VW mirror in-situ.
</gallery>

Instructions:

# Remove lotus mirror, by sliding the whole thing (including its stalk) DOWNWARDS. - it just slides down leaving a small mounting plate in place on the windscreen.
# Remove the mirror from the stalk by popping the "ball and socket" joint out of joint. I'd say lubricate it and pull straight out. (I don't know for certain, because my mirror just fell off its stalk.)
# Find a small mirror with it's ball joint on top in a scrappy. In my case I found a Golf 2 with a nice small mirror. I removed the stalk and mirror and separated them at home, using some WD40. I pulled straight out.
# Push the old stalk in the new mirror using some lubricant like WD40 I checked the size of both joints first. I'd say most of these joints are roughly the same size, but better safe than sorry.
# Slide the whole thing back onto the windscreen mounting.

Done!

Or, pop out old mirror (mine came out without any bother), then use sandpaper on the ball of the new VW mirror till you have made the ball small enough to pop in without smashing your windscreen. Only took a few minutes of rubbing to get it to fit. Ohhh la.

Added by JohnF

Initially, I couldn't get the Golf mirror to fit, even with a bit of WD40. I wasn't keen on sanding the ball down, in case this left it too loose and I was half way back to where I started (i.e. mirror ending up lopsided after 5 minutes drive). I eventually put a towel round the mirror, put the mirror onto a bench, positioned the ball onto the socket and gave the socket mount a sharp hit with hammer. It popped in first time. Obviously, I can't guarantee that this will work again - I did it having reached a point where I figured if it wouldn't go in I was happy to sacrifice a 2nd hand Golf mirror.

Child view mirrors
Another option is a stick-on mirror from halfords, easy to fit and also quite cheap.

The indicators taken from the Vauxhall/Opel parts bin eventually give up the ghost. This is first shown when the full beam flash function refuses to work.

The replacement part is Vauxhall/Opel No 9181010 and can be got form any Vauxhall/Opel dealer, although at around £40 plus VAT it's cheaper to buy a new non OEM part for less than £15 on the web or ebay.

I was able to obtain the OEM (Bilstein from Germany) part in July 2014 from www.VauxhallWorldParts.com for £16, inc VAT & UK postage. The part is the same for both the S1 and S2.

Firstly you need to remove the cowling around the steering wheel.
You might want to clean up a little in here, the picture shows nearly 8 years or crud.

Once the cowling is off the indicator stalk can be slid away from the housing by pinching the clips on the top and bottom of the unit.
The cables can be prized off the rear, usually in two culsters, again press the clips to ease them out.

Plug the cables in the new unit and slide home into the housing.

If all is working refit the cowling.

TEST IT WORKS.

If all is working refit the cowling.

Job done.

All that was left inside were the plastic ratchet (1), metal collar (2) and black plastic retainer (3).

Using a screw driver, prize the bottom part of the plastic ratchet out from behind the metal collar

The top part of the ratchet will now come out freely from behind the metal collar.
Be very careful not to damage the black plastic retainer. You need this to fit the new components.

Take the new filler cap and use a Stanley knife to cut tabs into the side of the filler cap.
Be careful not to cut into the white plastic components covered by the cap. Gradually cut away the cap, until most of the white plastic components (but not the barrel lock) and the metal collar are free from the cap. Once you’re able, remove the white plastic components and the metal collar from what’s left of the filler cap.

Carefully cut around the lock barrel, again making sure that you don’t damage the white plastic .

Remove the barrel and push it into the hole in the old filler cap. The barrel has a key-way and locking tabs which keep it in place – make sure you’re putting it in the right way. Note the location of the spring pin

Push a screwdriver down the side of the old metal collar, lever it out of shape and remove it from the old cap. Again, take care not to damage the black plastic retainer.

Take the lock mechanism from the new cap and place it on top of the lock barrel . Note that the long tongue goes into the deeper recess in the cap. This is on the opposite side of the lock barrel from the spring pin.

Put the two parts of the ratchet mechanism into the old cap, making sure the one with the row of teeth is nearest the top of the cap and the other part of the ratchet is towards the “fuel tank”. Put the threaded stopper onto the top of the lock mechanism.

Take the metal collar from the new cap. With the channel in the collar facing you, put it into the cap and using a flat screwdriver, gently push it past the lugs on the black plastic retainer.
Grip the threaded stopper in your hand and check that the lock and ratchet operate normally. Use a silicone lubricant (not WD40) on the ratchet and in the key hole. Job done.

As a final safety measure, I'd recommend not fitting the cap until you've filled the car up at a petrol station near home and have time to come back and remove the cap if it fails. Don't forget to change the fuel filler keys on your key ring as well.

Take the new filler cap and use a Stanley knife to cut tabs into the side of the filler cap.
Be careful not to cut into the white plastic components covered by the cap. Gradually cut away the cap, until most of the white plastic components (except the barrel lock) and the metal collar are free from the ). Once you’re able, remove the white plastic components and the metal collar from what’s left of the filler cap.

Carefully cut around the lock barrel, again making sure that you don’t damage the white plastic .

Remove the barrel and push it into the hole in the old filler cap. The barrel has a key-way so locking tabs which keep it in place – make sure you’re putting it in the right way.

Put the two parts of the ratchet mechanism into the old cap, making sure the one with the row of teeth is towards the cap and the other part of the ratchet is towards the “fuel tank”.

Job done.

EBC "Greenstuff"
A commonly used budget pad, OK for normal road use but don't cope to well when pushed.

Ferodo
DS2500
Mintex
1144
Excellent value for fast road and occasional track. Quick to bed in and work well from cold. Good pad life and not particularly abrasive on disks, although can be a bit dusty. Some fade experienced after pro-longed track use.

RS 4-2 Blue
A medium friction racing compound with good cold friction and fading resistance up to 500°C ( 930°F).
* Work well from cold.

RS 14 Black
This is a medium high friction value ceramic type compound with very good modulation, high fade resistance, low heat conductivity, and a good wear rate up to a temperature of 650°C (1.200°F).
* Eat discs.
* Not as effective from cold.
* Very track orientated pad so not ideal on the road.

RS 15 Grey
Very high torque compound. It combines a 20% higher friction value than the RS14 with a slightly increased pad wear. Needs finesse to avoid over braking the car. Good release characteristic. Although the RS15 has a very good modulation (controllability) it might have an excessive bite for some applications, as lightweight cars or cars with boosted brakes. Applications: NASCAR, CART, F3, Touring cars, GT cars, WSC, DP, Trans Am and Rally.
