[If you have 2 years+ claim-free experience driving an Elise or similar, quotes are very competitive. 10% discounts available for SELOC Club Supporters. Also additional discount (10%) to be had for car control course / driver training - need certificate to prove attendance though]. Track cover includes some EU circuits (Nurburgring) but doesn't include recovery costs and windscreen damage not covered on track. Won't mirror NCB from another car, but were happy to give me 4 year's worth "introductory bonus". Policies limited to 7000 miles. **17.02.14 - confirmed have to be over 40yo**
May 2012 - Just got a quote and it included 6 track days with the same conditions as above. As of 2012, Aviva (CCI's underwriter) are heavily loading premiums for anyone that requires "commuting" cover, be sure to mention if you dont need it.
Will mirror NCB from other cars - no need to transfer your NCB to the vehicle insured with them. Check terms with Heritage. Spoke to on 11/1/2012 and refused to quote on Elise, saying they dont really deal with these any more. 25 Sept 2015 - Martin no longer there, struggle to insure newer cars, quoted £2k+ for V6 Exige (v's approx. £500 elsewhere)
Seemed concerned about whether they would be able to cover a V6 Exige with value in excess of £40k.
Cannot provide cover if you've had a fault claim in the last 12 months.
As of 2012, Aviva are heavily loading premiums for anyone that requires "commuting" cover, be sure to mention if you dont need it though Matt is on the ball and will almost certainly ask you. (Tyrex) - I spoke to Henderson today (4/1/13) who confirmed that the maximum annual mileage for their policies was 6000. **17.02.14 - maximum mileage is now 4500pa!**
Discounts for driver training. Happy to quote for Lotus too, very friendly/helpful. Target profile is primarily second car or low mileage (5K) drivers, werent competitive (for me) on a 9K miles policy. Well worth a try if you fit their profile though. Offer multi-car policies and unlimited track days. Honda transplants will exceed their bhp mod limit.
Days with non-ATDO track day companies are not covered, however Lotus on Track have recently joined ATDO.
Need to be over age of 25 for a policy (confirmed as of 17/12/2015)
Xenon or HID lamps are the bright white lamps you normally find in the newer generation cars. Although these lamps draw less current then the OE halogen bulbs, the light output is increased by approx. 3 - 3.5x over a Halogen bulb.

Besides the colour temperature of these lamps is different. Some kits quote around 6000 Kelvin which is experienced as near daylight. The advantage of this colour temperature is a more relaxing view of what's in front of you. Besides, road marking will reflect better.

It is a common misconception that the higher the K (Kelvin temperature) the brighter the bulb. In fact it is the opposite. The K rating is inversely proportional to the light output.

The actual bulb looks like a small glass bubble. The bubble looks empty, but is filled with Xenon gas. (hence the reason why some people call these lamps Xenon lamps) The Xenon gas is used as the conductor. Applying 12 Volts to this conductor wouldn't start the lamp as the Xenon gas needs a higher voltage to start. To start the lamp, you need to apply approx. 24000 Volts, but when the lamp heats up the voltage is lowered to approx. 85 Volts.

Comparing the two: (based on a H1 (=Elise S2) base)
Halogen HID
Wattage (W) 55 / 35
Candela (CD) 67500 / 202500
Lumen (Lm) 1550 / 3200
ColourTemp (K) 3200 / 6000

The subsequent 6 pictures by Grinnders show the comparison between standard Halogen and 4000k HID on an S1 in standard H4 units.

There are a number of options for garage flooring and this guide is to show different options with the merits of each.

Foam Tiles
Probably one of the easiest and least messy but could potentially be more expensive than a pot of paint.

Machine Mart - Clarke Anti Fatigue Foam Floor Tiles

Not the cheapest at £20 per pack (approx £9 sq.m.) but comes with a nice set of yellow borders (if you like that sort of thing). I understand that you can mix and match them with a cheaper option from Maplins...
clr

Maplins Interlocking Cushioned Floor Mats

These are reportedly identical to the Clarke tiles and can be mixed and matched. If you wanted a small yellow border (by the garage door for instance) then you could buy one pack from Machine Mart and then buy the rest from Maplins. Pretty good value at £12.99 a set (approx £6 sq.m.).

The same tiles are available for £10 from Costco if you have access to an account (approx £4.70 sq.m.).

High Impact Plastic Tiles
Prices will vary over time, but the following products were listed in order of cost (from low to high) per square metre (including vat) from quotes/enquiries in 2009.

Kiwi Tiles

A superb option and available in Pantone colours. Priced at £19.38 sq.m
The site also has a Floor Designer where you can design your floor with different colours.
Distributed in the UK by RALT Engineering in Oxford (the racecar folks).

The U.S. Kiwitile website has some further pictures and specs.
Costco Motofloor

Priced at £19.57 sq.m.
Motofloor is made by SnapLock (the same company that makes Racedeck floor tiles in the US). Motofloor is only sold in bulk packs of black & white, no custom orders in specific quantites etc. Be careful with your floor pattern - the white tiles under the wheels will almost inevitably end up with brown splodges from vulcanisation with the tyre rubber.

Dura tiles / garagewizards £25 sq.m.

Dynotile £29 sq.m.

tektiles £31 sq.m.

TactTiles £49 sq.m.

Mototile £21.60 sq.m.

ShowTrax - FloorTrax £24.95 sq.m (+Vat?)

Carpet
A nice Axminster will do but any old carpet is perfect. If you use carpet tiles then there is a risk of them being moved by your wheels so it might be worth glueing them down with spray mount (or another glue)

Please add a photo if you have a good one

Lino Flooring
Many people have bought non-slip lino flooring from ebay (other places stock it of course) for around £5 per sq/m.

Search for 'non slip vinyl flooring' and you should find what you're looking for.
clr

Costco have been occasionally stocking a rubber matting/flooring called g-floor since 2008. Try your local store, the costco item code for g-floor is 112281, though apparently its not a permanent stock item so you might have to phone around to see which store has got any in. Priced at £146.86 for a 17.5 ft x 7.5 ft mat (approx £12 sq.m.)

This procedure details how to change the nearside upper and lower wishbone bushes on an S2 K-series Lotus Elise. An identical procedure is used to replace the offside front wishbone bushes and most of the principles apply when changing the rear upper and lower wishbone bushes.

The wishbones on the S1 Elise are very similar. The main differences are:-

S2 front wishbones are approximately 8mm longer per side and the bottom front wishbones have different damper mounting points.

The damper mounting points are in the same place on the rear wishbones, but the handbrake cable restraint is different.

So this procedure can also be used for the S1.

Several types of wishbone bushes can be fitted to the Lotus Elise:-

* OEM - Good ride quality, ideal for normal road, fast road and track use. The central steel sleeve is bonded to the rubber so it does not pivot around it freely.
* Polyurethene - Good ride quality, ideal for normal road, fast road and track use. The central sleeve rotates freely within the bush.
* Nylatron - Firm ride quality and not recommended for normal road use, ideal for fast road and track use. The central sleeve rotates freely within the bush.
* Spherical Joints - Harsh ride quality and recommended for track use only. These are not bushes, but close tolerance stainless steel bearings, commonly known as Rose Joints and need to be welded into the wishbones. These are not suitable as DIY replacements.

OEM wishbone bushes do not require periodic maintenance. Maintaining polyurethene and nylatron bushes is much easier than fitting them. The wishbones do not need to be completely removed from the car if you need to re-grease the sleeves. All wishbones can be removed from the chassis by just taking out the wishbone bolts and sliding the wishbones out. All other suspension and brake components can remain in place. Only the brake pipe clamps need to be removed and care must be taken to ensure that the brake pipes are not under strain when maintaining the bushes.

<gallery>
Image:19g_Upper_Wishbone_Removed_Without_Removing_Ball_Joint.JPG|This photograph shows polyurethene bushes being maintained in the front upper wishbone with all other components undisturbed, apart from the brake pipe clamp.
</gallery>

Polyurethane bushes are shown being fitted using this procedure and I have explained the different steps required for fitting OEM, polyurethene and nylatron bushes where appropriate.

Periodic maintenance is required for polyurethene bushes. If the grease dries out then the sleeves will become scored and the inside of the bushes will start to break up.

Here are a couple of photographs showing a sleeve and it's bush that have not been regreased for 35,000 miles.

Image:Scored_Polyurethene_Bush.JPG
</gallery>

Nylatron bushes require even more regular maintinance. Whilst the bush material is harder wearing the lubrication gets expelled very quickly when they are used on the road. These inserts are from a car that only covered 15,000 miles in 2 years of largely dry miles.

Image:8b_Damper_Assembly_Removed.JPG|8b. Damper removed.
Image:9_Remove_Drop_Link.JPG|9. Remove the drop link from the lower wishbone.
Image:10_Remove_Upper_&_Lower_Ball_Joint_Nuts.JPG|10. Remove the upper and lower ball joint nuts.
Image:11_Remove_Both_Ball_Joints.JPG|11. Remove the upper and lower ball joints from the hub carrier. I prefer to use a fork splitter, but there is a high probability of damaging the ball joint dust covers. Some people prefer to use a scissor type splitter for this step.
Image:12_Hub_Carrier_Removed.JPG|12. The ball joints are both removed from the hub carrier. If you apply some lubricant to the ball joint dust cover when using a fork splitter it can prevent the dust cover from splitting.

Image:13_The_spring_Clips_Usually_Come_Off_the_Balljoint_Rubber.JPG|13. The retaining springs always come off the dust covers when using a fork splitter, but they are easy to put back on if lubricant has been used.
Image:14a_Remove_the_Upper_Wishbone_1.JPG|14a. Remove the upper wishbone. There are four shims for both the front and the rear bushes. Make a note of where they are positioned as the number of shims placed either side of the bush set the castor angle.
The shims must be reassembled in the same order as they came off. The same number of shims must be placed either side of the rear bush as the front bush. The front bush uses large diameter shims and one of them is a snubber washer that has rubber bonded onto each face. It is important to place this shim in the correct position because it is there to prevent metal to metal contact when using OEM bushes. The rear bush uses small diameter shims.
Image:14b_Remove_The_Upper_Wishbone_2.JPG|14b. Remove the upper wishbone continued.
Image:15b_Upper_Wishbone_Removed_2.JPG|15a. The upper wishbone has been removed.
Image:15c_Upper_Wishbone.JPG|15b. This photograph shows the upper wishbone off the car.
Image:19h_Snubber_Washer.JPG|Snubber washer.
</gallery>

If you are fitting nylatron or polyurethane bushes you will not be able to refit the snubber washer without modifying it, so you will either need to remove the rubber from the faces of the shim or replace it with a standard large diameter shim. The snubber washer is not designed to be used with aftermarket bushes because the flat of the washer will not make proper contact with the sleeve of the wishbone. This will result in the sleeve not being clamped up tight.

It is worth using new shims when replacing wishbone bushes.

Part numbers for replacement shims:-

* A111C0080F (Qty 8) - Shim, castor adjustment, small

* A111C0077F (Qty 6) - Shim, castor adjustment

* A111C0081F (Qty 2) - Snubber washer, rubber coated upper wishbone

<gallery>
Image:16a_Remove_Lower_Wishbone_1.JPG|16a. Remove the lower wishbone. If you are working on your own you will find that it is impossible to remove the rear lower wishbone bolt. To overcome this problem I cable tie a ring spanner to the lower wishbone so that I can remove the bolt from inside the footwell without an assistant.

Image:16b_Remove_Lower_Wishbone_2.JPG|16b. If you are working on the nearside and you have a passenger foot rest you will need to remove it first and then you can access the wishbone bolt.
Image:16c_Lower_Wishbone.JPG|16c. Lower wishbone removed from the car.
Image:17_Both_Wishbones_Removed.JPG|17. Both wishbones have been removed from the car.
Image:18a_Remove_Sleeve_from_Polybush.JPG|18a. If you are removing a polyurethane bush you will need to tap out the stainless steel sleeve first. I use a slightly smaller diameter sleeve to tap out the bush sleeve. The same process can be applied if you are removing nylatron bush sleeves that have become tight. Do NOT do this if you are removing an OEM bush.

Image:18b_Remove_Polybush_From_Wishbone.JPG|18b. The polyurethane bush can be tapped out easily using a 7/8 inch socket. I have removed nylatron bushes by tapping out the bottom bush using a screwdriver through the centre hole from the top bush, but the bush is not reusable with this method as the screwdriver damages the bush. It is NOT possible to remove an OEM bush by using either of these methods.

Image:18c_Remove_Standard_Bush_From_Wishbone.JPG|18c. I have added this photograph to show how an OEM bush can be removed from the wishbone. This photograph is an indication of how to remove an OEM bush as the one shown is polyurethane and CANNOT be removed by this method. Additional notes: A bit of WD40 does wonders. Socket sizes: a 32mm socket to 'receive' the bushes (on the side with the lip!). A 12mm socket is a perfect fit to push it out - it sits on the inner metallic tube but actually pushes the entire bush out.
</gallery>

The top hat is much thinner on an OEM bush so the 7/8 inch socket on the left can break the top hat and push the bush through the wishbone easily. The 11/8 inch socket on the right will allow the bush to be pressed out of the wishbone by about 1 inch.

The assembly will then need to be removed from the vice and reinserted as in step 18b. The 7/8 inch socket can be used to tap out the remainder of the bush. The OEM bush is NOT reusable.

Different methods are used to press in the bushes dependant upon whether OEM, nylatron or polyurethane bushes are being used. In this procedure I have re-fitted polyurethane bushes which are reusable and can be inserted by hand. Nylatron and OEM bushes need to be pressed in to fit. I have never fitted OEM bushes but pressing it should be possible using a heavy duty bench vice and suitable lubricant. Nylatron bushes can definitely be pressed in using a bench vice.

It is important that the bushes are inserted into the wishbones in the correct way. The drawing below shows which way to insert both OEM and polyurethane bushes into the front upper and lower wishbones. You will see that the top wishbone bushes are inserted from the outside and the lower wishbone bushes are inserted from the inside of the wishbones. The same method applies to the rear wishbones. Nylatron bushes are designed differently and two bushes are used for each joint; one bush inserted from either end.

Copper grease needs to be applied to the sleeves on polyurethene bushes during assembly to ensure the sleeves rotate freely in the bushes but it is not recommended for nylatron. Molybdenum grease is the recommended lubricant for nylatron bushes and they will probably need to be reamed after they are pressed in to ensure the sleeve rotates freely in the bush. The tolerance of the wishbone means the two bushes will not always line up exactly when they are inserted from opposite ends. This means the sleeve will not rotate freely and they will tend to bind when in use if they are not fettled.

I was not happy with my polyurethane bush installation for the front upper wishbones and I have subsequently made a modification by replacing the small diameter shims that are used on the top rear bushes with the large diameter shims used for the front top wishbone bush. I have found that the small shims penetrate into the polyurethane bushes when the car is driven, like this:-

<gallery>
Image:19c_Upper_Rear_Wishbone_Bush_Fitted.JPG|This photograph shows how the front upper rear wishbone bush had moved after the car was driven. Both rear shims had penetrated the bush which is now misaligned.
Image:19d_Upper_Rear_Wishbone_Bush_showing_Both_Shims_Embedded.JPG|This photograph shows both rear shims embedded into the polyurethene bush.
Image:19e_Upper_Rear_Wishbone_Bush_Showing_Embedded_Shims_Removed.JPG|This photograph shows both shims removed from the bush and you can see that the inner sleeve has been pushed forward.
</gallery>

This is how I have subsequently fitted the shims on the upper front wishbones:-

When the bushes have been fitted, the wishbones need to be re-attached to the car. The reassembly procedure is more or less the reverse of disassembly.

It can be very difficult to get the castor shims back in on the upper front wishbone assembly. It is even more difficult if you are fitting nylatron bushes as you cannot compress the top hats of the bushes. You can superglue the shims together before re-assembly, but this does not work very well if you are re-using old shims because their faces will have become rusty. I fit the shims as closely as possible by tapping them in gently trying not to break the superglue then I use a tapered drift to align the centre holes so the wishbone bolt fits. Do not be tempted to use excessive force to drive the wishbone bolt in as this will result in the bolt thread becoming damaged. If you are re-fitting the small diameter shims you will find they are much harder to fit than the large diameter shims and if you use excessive force the small shims will distort and you will not be able to pass the wishbone bolt through them.

Once again, because this is important.

<gallery>
Image:19h_Snubber_Washer.JPG|Snubber washer.
</gallery>

If you are fitting nylatron or polyurethane bushes then you can torque tighten all of the wishbone bolts without having to fully re-build the assembly.

If you are fitting OEM bushes then all of the components must be fitted loosely. The bolts cannot be torque tightened at this stage because the suspension needs to be loaded and sitting at normal ride height otherwise the bushes will try to rip themselves apart during use as they will be tightened at the wrong orientation.

Lotus recommend smearing grease on the wishbone bolt shanks before re-assembly when fitting OEM bushes and do not get any grease on the bolt threads. This is not necessary when fitting nylatron or polyurethene bushes because the sleeves do not rotate around the bolt. Both the bolt and sleeves remain fixed and the bushes rotate around the sleeves.

Step 19. Torque tighten the upper wishbone bolts to 45Nm after fitting polyurethane or nylatron bushes. Both front and rear are easily accessible.

When fitting nylatron bushes you must ensure that when the bolts have been torque tightened each wishbone drops under its own weight. If you need to apply any force to lower the wishbone then the sleeves are too tight in the bushes and the wishbone will have to be removed and further reaming will be required to ensure the sleeves are not too tight in the bush. This is important because the handling of the car may be affected if the sleeves are too tight as the wishbones will have a tendancy to drag. Also there will be a tendancy for the bushes to rotate in the wishbone instead of the sleeves which will polish and start to wear out the wishbone. But more importantly, badly fitted nylatron bushes are dangerous because if the sleeves bind in the bushes the wishbone bolts can become loose because the nuts will try to unwind themselves when the suspension raises and lowers in use. If you see the bushes rotating in the wishbone then you must not continue assembing the suspension.

<gallery>
Image:19_Torque_Upper_Wishbone.JPG|19a. Remember, you must loosely fit OEM bushes at this stage and assemble the suspension completely then load it to the normal ride height before torque tightening the wishbone bolts.
Image:19b_Upper_Front_Wishbone_Bush_Fitted.JPG|19b. This photoraph is a close up of the upper front wishbone bush fitted with a polyurethene bush after it has been torque tightened.
Image:19f_Upper_Rear_Wishbone_Bush_Fitted_With_Large_Diameter_Shims.JPG|19c. I have used large diameter shims for the upper rear wishbone and they are much easier to fit than the small diameter shims. Also they will not embed themselves in the polyurethene bush.
Image:20a_Torque_Lower_Wishbone_1.JPG|20a. Refit the lower wishbone. The front nut and bolt are easily accessible. If you are working on your own you will find that it is impossible to torque tighten the lower rear wishbone bolt. To overcome this problem I cable tie a ring spanner to the lower wishbone so that I can torque tighten the bolt from inside the foot well without an assistant.
Image:20b_Torque_Lower_Wishbone_2.JPG|20b. The rear lower wishbone bolt can be torque tightened to 45Nm from inside the footwell.
Image:21_Replace_Passenger_Footrest.JPG|21. If you are working on the nearside you can replace the passenger foot rest.
Image:22_Torque_Drop_Link.JPG|22. Torque tighten the drop link to 45NM.
Image:23_Loosley_Fit_Damper_Assembly.JPG|23. You can loosely fit the damper at this stage. I find it easier to fit now rather than later because the hub carrier is not in the way. Ensure that you grease the top hat washers where they come into contact with the damper. The bolts cannot be torque tightened at this point because the suspension needs to be loaded and sitting at normal ride height otherwise the damper bushes will try to rip themselves apart during use as they will be tightened at the wrong orientation.
Image:24_Fit_Hub_Assembly.JPG|24. The hub assembly can now be refitted. The suspension needs to be loaded by placing a jack under the hub carrier and jacked to normal ride height. Both upper and lower ball joints can be torque tightened to 55Nm although you will not be able to use a torque wrench on the lower ball joint nut if you only have a basic tool kit, in which case you will have to estimate the correct torque using a ring spanner.
Image:25_Torque_Damper_Assembly.JPG|25. The damper can now be torque tightened to 45Nm and if you have fitted OEM wishbone bushes all of the wishbone bolts can be torque tightened to 45Nm at this stage.
Image:26_Slacken_Off_Brake_Pad.JPG|26. Refit the brake disc. You may find that you will need to slacken off one of the brake pads if your disc has developed a lip. I use a clamp and an old steel rule on the face of the pad to spread the load.
Image:27_Measure_Brake_Disc_Thickness.JPG|27. It is always a good idea to measure the thickness of your brake disc at regular intervals to ensure it is still within tolerance.
Image:28_Torque_Brake_Caliper.JPG|28. Refit the brake caliper and torque tighten it to 45Nm.
Image:29_Refit_Brake_Pipe_Clamp.JPG|29. Refit the brake pipe clamp.
Image:30_Refit_Front_Undertray.JPG|30. Refit the front under tray unless you are about to start on the other side of the car.
Image:31_Nip_Up_Road_Wheel_Bolts.JPG|31. Refit the road wheel and nip the wheel bolts/nuts up. Check to ensure there is no play in any of the suspension components by trying to rock the wheel from side to side by holding it at a quarter to three.
Image:32_Torque_Road_Wheel_Bolts.JPG|32. Lower the car to the ground and torque up the road wheel bolts to 105Nm on an S2 or the wheel nuts to 80-85Nm on an S1. Press the brake pedal several times to get the pedal feel back.
As this is major suspension work it is advisable to check and adjust the suspension geometry. See http://wiki.seloc.org/index.php/Geo_Setups

The diagram below shows which way the OEM bushes should be inserted into the wishbones. Note that there are 3 different part numbers and they are the same for both S1 & S2.
There is some confusion about which kind of mirror is fitted to which cars, I suppose...
At least my 2004 S2 111S had a GM mirror with the ball joint on top of the mirror.

Anyway: I've found a Golf 2 mirror to fit quite nicely. This mirror is even smaller than a Deawoo Matiz mirror and, more importantly, it fits on cars that have mirrors which have their ball joint on top.
# Remove the mirror from the stalk by popping the "ball and socket" joint out of joint. I'd say lubricate it and pull straight out. (I don't know for certain, because my mirror just fell off its stalk.)
# Find a small mirror with it's ball joint on top in a scrappy. In my case I found a Golf 2 with a nice small mirror. I removed the stalk and mirror and separated them at home, using some WD40. I pulled straight out.
# Push the old stalk in the new mirror. I checked the size of both joints first. I'd say most of these joints are roughly the same size, but better safe than sorry.

Paulc: spelling

This guide by Janitor outlines the steps required to fit HID headlights to an S2. There are different versions of the kit, but the principles remain pretty much the same.

The 1st step is to remove the front wheels – clear and easy access is the only way to go. Observe recommended jacking points and safety here. Once wheels are removed, start on the front section of the wheel arch liner. I’m not personally familiar with fixings and methods before the MY06 models, but I think they may differ slightly

Procedure
1. Remove the headlamp cover

2. Fit new Xenon bulbs
<gallery>
Image:hid installation 6.jpg|Note how the lugs on the bulb base locate in designated positions on the housing
</gallery>
Unplug, unclip and remove the existing dipped headlight bulb and install the HID bulb. I chose to do this first of all so that it’s safely stowed and kept clean whilst you’re sorting the cabling. Due to the lack of easy access, placing the HID tube into the holder is difficult, but be patient and avoid touching the bulb itself with fingers. (It can be cleaned with alcohol & lint-free cloth if accidental contact is made)

3. Trim grommet
<gallery>
Image:hid installation 7.jpg
</gallery>
Next up, poke through the rubber grommet from inside (1) and trim the inner edge a little (2) to free things up a little for when it comes to pushing the HID bulb cable connectors through. Take much care here – don’t cut the cables or yourself and remember that your precious paintwork is barely a couple of inches away!

4. Thread cables
<gallery>
Image:hid installation 8.jpg
Image:hid installation 9.jpg|New cables & connectors viewed from inside the arch
</gallery>
Thread all the appropriate connectors through the grommet (1) and refitting the grommet is best done by poking the whole thing through the hole in the clam and manipulating back into place from the inside of the arch. Attach the HID unit feeds to the original headlight bulb connectors (2) and tape them up for insulation and a little extra mechanical fastening (3). Tuck excess cable neatly away under the cable entry point away from the bulb housing and the hole for the glass fixing bolt (4)

(Note that the grommet supplied on the replacement HID bulb cables is not needed in this case. Either remove or carefully slide it up to the existing entry grommet as an extra drip-break)

5. Power on test
<gallery>
Image:hid installation 11.jpg|The Ballast
</gallery>
Take this opportunity to connect the HID feeds or ‘ballasts’ and run a quick power-up test – there is really only one way this kit can go together (unless you’re trying really hard!) and it beats stripping everything apart again afterwards should something not be quite right!

6. Secure ballast
<gallery>
Image:hid installation 10.jpg|Bracket for fixing ballast
Image:hid installation 12.jpg|Ballast in place
</gallery>

Being unsure exactly what is what under there, I found it tricky to locate a safe & secure place into which I felt confident of tapping screws for mounting the ballasts. There are twin oil-coolers on the SportsRacer and not knowing what was behind any other panels, I elected to utilise the supplied bracket and then a ‘known’ fixing. One 10mm socket later and all was firmly attached to one of the light unit mount bolts (not the glass securing bolts!). This is ideal as it is away from all other components and pipes etc whilst not interfering when arch liner is refitted.

7. Refit sidelight bulbs
<gallery>
Image:hid installation 13.jpg
</gallery>
Replacing the sidelight bulbs is dead simple. The holder is fixed into the top side of the main beam light housing and you simply turn the sidelight bulb holder through 90 degrees, substitute the standard bulb with a direct LED replacement and refit

The headlight fuse needs upgrading from 10A to 15A. Although the HIDs actually draw less power, they have a high power draw on startup. Fuses under passenger side bonnet panel
TUTORIAL: Fitting of £60 HID kit by steve1978.
Kit consists of:
2 ballasts
2 Bulbs
all connections
nuts and bolts
cable ties.

Other kit required.
trolley jack
flat head screw driver
cross head screw driver
electricians tape.

Time taken approx 30 mins per light.

Step1: Remove the wheel

Step 2: Remove the 3 flat headed larger thumb screws. Now the light lense will come off

Step 3: Back under the wheel remove the screws holding the wheel arch lining in place. when complete ease the lining out

Step 4: On the top of the liner there is a void. this is where the ballast will be fitted (between the body and the lining), if you look through the bonnet vent you may just be able to see the location of the ballast.

Step 5: Remove the existing light bulb and insert your new one, you may find it easier to remove the lighting unit, we did (3 cross headed screws on the inside of the arch). feed the cables through the hole and connect them up. there is only one possible way to connect them.

Step 6: Insert the liner back in to the wheel arch and connect the lights back to the ballast, now test the lights. if all is working then reassemble

Step 7 Stand back and be proud!

The windscreen wipers on the elise can be a bit sucky, so here is a list of things you can do to aid visibility in wet weather.

1) Rain-X. A liquid windscreen coating that costs about £5 from halfords. This causes water to form beads and run off, greatly improving visibility. At high speeds, windscreen wipers are not always necessary even in heavy rain.
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10151&productId=222433&categoryId=31293

2) S2 Wiper arm (If you have an S1 or older S2). The OE S1 wiper arm requires a special blade, and also does not pivot away from the windscreen fully. For about £25 you can replace this with an S2 arm and a standard blade. The Lotus part number for the S2 Wiper Arm is A117MO105F. Fitting the arm is easy:

- take note of the blade position (it's a good idea to stick some masking tape to the windscreen and draw a line on the masking tape showing the blade position).

- lift the plastic cap at the bottom of the arm.

- undo bolt and remove the existing arm. Don't prise the arm away with a screwdriver levered against the windscreen; this will likely crack the windscreen glass.

- locate new arm in position noted earlier and then tighten the bolt. The splines on the fitting will cut into the smooth plastic of the wiper arm as you tighten the bolt. It may be necessary to use a file to increase the size of the hole on the arm so that it sits low enough on the spindle.

- check that the front service compartment lid will close properly and does not touch the arm. Tighten the bolt further if necessary. Be careful not to chip the paint on the bonnet when you close it (if the arm is not low enough on the spindle, or the arm is positioned wrongly, the bonnet will make contact with the arm). Masking tape is recommended here to protect the bonnet while testing to see if it closes. It may be necessary to have the S2 arm a little higher at rest than the S1 arm so that it clears the bonnet.

3) Valeo VM15 wiper blade with Spray bar. About £12 for a 24" blade from http://www.wiperblades.co.uk (Do a search for Renault, Espace, 1994 - quote <s>'stidrivers'</s> <u>This code no longer appears valid, nor the stdrivers variant. Use polepos10 instead, working on 26/10/9</u> on the checkout for 10% discount). This blade comes with a spray bar fitted, which replaces your windscreen washer jets (see Windscreen washer mod). Requires the S2 wiper arm. Extremely good, and very easy to attach the washer fluid bottle to the blade instead of the jets (you'll need about 1 m of 3 mm inner diameter tubing, £4 or so from ebay, to hook it up). Make sure you buy the wiper blade for the correct side of the car.

3a) SWF 116153 wiper blade with Spray bar 26" long. Again £12(ish) but from a local motorfactors. This is the drivers side blade from a 1996-2002 Espace (also fitted to Citroen C8 02on, Fiat Ulysee 02on, Lancia Phedra 02on, Merc Benz Vito and V-klasse and finally Pug 807 02 on). The only "issue" some might have with the drivers side blade is that the washer hose comes in from the roof end of the wiper and not the bonnet.

4) Aero Blades. Some drivers have reported these work really well, although they do lift a little bit at the edges.

If you notice the edges of the wiper are lifting away from the windscreen, you can gently bend the inner part of the blade frame using pliers to increase the amount of travel available to the brackets.

By far the best blade I’ve ever fitted to a vehicle is the Aero Blade from autobulbs, one piece rubber construction, no moving metal parts to bend or rust, the sweep rubber is still as new after one year on my vehicle. You will need an S2 arm to fit these, and about bending the end, which does lift off the screen over by tax disc, why bother it has no affect whatsoever on its cleaning or viewing area. Make sure it clicks securely into the arm, might require some force, have seen these badly fitted and then not sweep correctly.

5) Tesco 24 inch flat blade. £1.46 No kidding, works a treat (IF you have the later S2 universal J clip type arm). The blade is very pliable and moulds itself to the shape of the elise screen. Quiet, works well and smear free.
I found these blades are no longer available. So I bought the whole wiper for £3, took the blade of and fitted it to my old 'holder'. Simple and works great!
