Zender: /* Replacement Blades */

Elise
The windscreen wipers on the Elise can be a bit sucky, so here is a list of things you can do to aid visibility in wet weather.

1) Rain-X. A liquid windscreen coating that costs about £5 from halfords. This causes water to form beads and run off, greatly improving visibility. At high speeds, windscreen wipers are not always necessary even in heavy rain.
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10151&productId=222433&categoryId=31293

2) S2 Wiper arm (If you have an S1 or older S2). The OE S1 wiper arm requires a special blade, and also does not pivot away from the windscreen fully. For about £25 you can replace this with an S2 arm and a standard blade. The Lotus part number for the S2 Wiper Arm is A117MO105F. Fitting the arm is easy:

- take note of the blade position (it's a good idea to stick some masking tape to the windscreen and draw a line on the masking tape showing the blade position).

- lift the plastic cap at the bottom of the arm.

- undo bolt and remove the existing arm. Don't prise the arm away with a screwdriver levered against the windscreen; this will likely crack the windscreen glass.

- locate new arm in position noted earlier and then tighten the bolt. The splines on the fitting will cut into the smooth plastic of the wiper arm as you tighten the bolt. It may be necessary to use a file to increase the size of the hole on the arm so that it sits low enough on the spindle.

- check that the front service compartment lid will close properly and does not touch the arm. Tighten the bolt further if necessary. Be careful not to chip the paint on the bonnet when you close it (if the arm is not low enough on the spindle, or the arm is positioned wrongly, the bonnet will make contact with the arm). Masking tape is recommended here to protect the bonnet while testing to see if it closes. It may be necessary to have the S2 arm a little higher at rest than the S1 arm so that it clears the bonnet.

3) Valeo VM15 wiper blade with Spray bar. About £12 for a 24" blade from http://www.wiperblades.co.uk (Do a search for Renault, Espace, 1994 - quote <s>'stidrivers'</s> <u>This code no longer appears valid, nor the stdrivers variant. Use polepos10 instead, working on 26/10/9</u> on the checkout for 10% discount). This blade comes with a spray bar fitted, which replaces your windscreen washer jets (see Windscreen washer mod). Requires the S2 wiper arm. Extremely good, and very easy to attach the washer fluid bottle to the blade instead of the jets (you'll need about 1 m of 3 mm inner diameter tubing, £4 or so from ebay, to hook it up). Make sure you buy the wiper blade for the correct side of the car.

3a) SWF 116153 wiper blade with Spray bar 26" long. Again £12(ish) but from a local motorfactors. This is the drivers side blade from a 1996-2002 Espace (also fitted to Citroen C8 02on, Fiat Ulysee 02on, Lancia Phedra 02on, Merc Benz Vito and V-klasse and finally Pug 807 02 on). The only "issue" some might have with the drivers side blade is that the washer hose comes in from the roof end of the wiper and not the bonnet.

4) Aero Blades. Some drivers have reported these work really well, although they do lift a little bit at the edges.

If you notice the edges of the wiper are lifting away from the windscreen, you can gently bend the inner part of the blade frame using pliers to increase the amount of travel available to the brackets.

By far the best blade I’ve ever fitted to a vehicle is the Aero Blade from autobulbs, one piece rubber construction, no moving metal parts to bend or rust, the sweep rubber is still as new after one year on my vehicle. You will need an S2 arm to fit these, and about bending the end, which does lift off the screen over by tax disc, why bother it has no affect whatsoever on its cleaning or viewing area. Make sure it clicks securely into the arm, might require some force, have seen these badly fitted and then not sweep correctly. The S2 arm requires the Bosch AR26U blade, the AM26U is the wrong fitting for the U-shaped Elise S2 arm.

5) Tesco 24 inch flat blade. £1.46 No kidding, works a treat (IF you have the later S2 universal J clip type arm). The blade is very pliable and moulds itself to the shape of the elise screen. Quiet, works well and smear free.
I found these blades are no longer available. So I bought the whole wiper for £3, took the blade of and fitted it to my old 'holder'. Simple and works great!

Evora
The Evora, like the Elise, uses a single wiper blade to clear the screen. Unlike the Elise however the Evoras windscreen wiper is 'parked' on the drivers side on both LHD and RHD cars.

I know very little about engines. When my car won't start, I haven't a clue what to do, where to look or what to try. It's depressing and you feel helpless

This is hopefully going to be a reference for things to try when your car is broken or won't start. It should provide a valuable starting place when you get that sinking feeling in your stomach and the search function is not helping.

It will no doubt become full of anecdotal advice, some of which may be contradictory or may not be relevant to your particular model. If you want to add to it, please keep to SOLUTIONS THAT HAVE WORKED rather than conjecture. That way it should cut down on arguments or deletions.

I'll start with a couple of my own soon but i'm not yet sure how to create subcategories. Feel free to edit, but consider it work in progress. If you know how to create subcategories under the main category of "Troubleshooting", please do it and save time. Thanks :-)
Car Won't Start
Absolutley nothing happens when key is turned (if you know solution, please edit this paragraph and supply an answer)

Battery flat

Immobiliser relay - not working? don't know much abvout this, can anyone edit?

Clicking noise when ignition is turned - Some charge in the battery, but not enough or starter motor is dead. Charge battery or maybe jumpstart.

You'll know if its the battery as the dash / headlights will dim when you attempt to start the car.

If starter motor, put car in 4th and push backwards a little, remove from 4th gear then try starting.

Dash lights up but that's it
did you hear the whirr of the fuel pump? if not, it could be one of the following reasons:

Fuel pump knackered - Apparently this is relatively uncommon but can happen. (can anyone who's had this happen edit this and explain how it was solved please). Fuel pump not working can also be caused by a wire that has rubbed sufficently that the plastic sheath has worn through and the wires have corroded and eventually snapped causing no power to the fuel pump.

Fuel pump fuse has blown (located in the boot on S1s) - Look in the passenger side of the boot and you'll find a black plastic circle. remove this and fiddle around inside until you can grab fuse. pliers are handy. 20A yellow fuse.

Problem with wiring - By the passenger seat (S1) is a small, metal, circular inspection cover. Remove this and someone handy with a multimeter can check if the fuel pump is drawing any current when ignition is turned. May help eliminate a problem, if not identify it.

Inertia switch has triggered - this is in the engine compartment (S1) and triggers in the case of an accident so that the fuel is cut off and reduces the risk of fire. it can be pressed to reset. It's like a big rubber button facing skywards, near the MFRU box.

MFRU (Multifunction Relay Unit) - this is a plastic box toward the rear of the engine compartment. It has a couple of big square plastic connectors and lots of wire going into it. I got water in mine after a particularly wet weekend. Had the symptoms described above. Drying the box helped restart the car but it went again due to corroded contacts on the connectors. Replacing the box (circa £40) solved the problem.

Starter Motor turns but the engine won't catch

You have put fuel in it, haven't you? - Oh how i laughed when both my brother and Mr AA man couldn't get his Vauxhall Nova to start. Tank was empty. Brother is a mechanic. Fools.

Has it rained heavily recently? Due to the engine cover having vents/holes in it (thereby making it unsuitable as a 'cover'), water can get to various places quite easily.

Is there a spark getting to the sparkplugs? - You can check for a spark by removing the king lead at the dizzy end and lying it on the engine. Turn over the car for a few revolutions and see if you get a good healthy blue spark. This is best done whilst NOT in strong sunlight, so a closed garage will do.
If there is a spark there then repeat the spark test at the spark plug end. If no spark then possibly the crank position sensor has gone south. If all ok (it sparks ok) then maybe the coolant sensor/air temp sensor/TPS. Unplugging the coolant/air sensors should mean the ECU 'replaces' those sensor vaues with 'default' ones. There was also a thread recently about someone who disconnected the TPS to get them home so I would assume the ECU has default values for that as well.

Dry the Distributor Cap - This can be removed and dried quite easily in about 5-10 mins. Remember which lead attaches where.

Check the Distributor Rotor Arm - Despite my car producing a spark, it was misfiring on acceleration. Mr AA man diagnosed it as a small crack in the contacts of the Rotor Arm. Replaced for £7 quid, everything has worked fine since.

Check the Sparkplugs - Despite there being a cover over them, they can get water ingress. Remove the cover and pull the plastic tab. The rubber plug covers look like this: which one do you think was faulty?
.

See the Sparkplug Wiki page for replacement info. Can be bought from Halfrauds, nothing special. They even listed Lotus in the flipchart thing, which i was surprised about.

Is fuel getting to the engine? - Fuel pump problem? Also worth checking the 'multiplugs' just forward of the ECU and giving them a squirt of contact cleaner. Check the earth plate in the left rear corner of the engine bay and clean up the contacts with emery paper.
Make sure the inertia switch hasn't popped up. The latch degrades over time and doesn't necessarily need a sudden shock to activate.

Other suggestions from the forums include:

- check inertia switch
- check fuel pump fuse
- check if fuel pump primes
- if fuel problem can be excluded...
- check, or speculatively replace
. HT leads, master HT lead
. distributor cap and rotor arm
. coil pack
. crankshaft sensor

Noises whilst Driving
Grinding Noises

Stones - could be stones caught between the brake disc and the brake pad. Do you have unexpected circular grooves ground out of the disc? Since the wheel is moving forwards, sometimes a quick reverse can dislodge the stone. Failing that, remove the wheel and take out the brake pad

Wheel Bearings - When mine went, I got a grinding, whirring noise that was related to car speed, not engine speed. It was there even when I depressed the clutch and the noise 'wound down' in pitch as the car coasted to a halt. Can also manifest itself when turning either left or right, indicated a problem side.

Clunking

my (standard) 111R has just developed a worrying road speed clunk from the rear.
It's only noticeable a really slow speeds (2-10mph) and is even accompanied by a slight 'catching' sensation. It sounds to me like driveshafts?

Figured it out - it's a sticky rear caliper that binds slightly every revolution.

Dash has died (S2)
Car works, some lights come on but needles don't move - Could perhaps be caused by a bad earth. Disconnecting from the battery and reconnecting may 'reboot' the Stack Unit and sort out the problem (anecdotal advice)

Lights stay on all of the time
"I have a new electrical problem in that my passenger front and rear sidelights come on and stay on as soon as the ignition is turned. No combination of pressing light switches makes them go out, they are still on once the engine is started. The front side light seems to pulse when the engine is running.
I have fitted a new battery last month and I have checked all earth points are good and clean.

I have finally cured this problem:
Certainly took a bit of finding. This was caused by the wiring loom being chaffed in the centre tunnel between the two footwells. The lower nut that holds the driver footrest on had rubbed through one of the large wires which shorted and took out five smaller wires. It eventually blew the 50amp ignition fuse and it was only after the car started stalling that I realised the problem was bigger than just the lights playing up. I only managed to find this due to me starting the car before I got in, I happened to catch the footrest as I got in and the fuse blew again. There is very little movement of the footrest, but just the weight of my foot on it was enough to cause it to blow.
It looks like the halfords muppets that fitted the stereo and sub for the previous owner managed to trap the loom when they rammed their wiring in and it took a couple of years to cause damage as I dont use the foot rest that often"

Replace Wheel Bearings
Elise S1
A detailed guide for changing the front wheel bearing on an S1 can be found here.

Elise S2
All S2 Elises (irrespective of engine type) use a similar type of wheel bearing. The only difference between these is that the later cars with ABS use bearings with integraded speed pulse sensors for the ABS, while older cars without ABS use 3 'plain' bearings and 1 with a speed pulse sensor.

The latter connects to the ECU which in turn feeds a signal to the dash.

Basic design
The wheel bearings on the S2 are complete units that are bolted to the uprights. The bearing units are sealed for life and not servicable. They can not be opened without being destroyed.

The bearing and hub come as a complete package ready to install. On the upright side there are 3 bolt holes (M12 metric fine) which line up with the holes in the uprights.

The bearing units are bolted to the uprights with 90Nm of torque on each bolt.

Bolts can usually be re-used, but examine them for corrosion (pitting) or other damage. In case of doubt, replace with new ones.

* Lotus part number for bolts: A116W1170F

Front
Removal
* Undo the wheel bolts
* Jack up the car on the 'A' jacking point to raise the side of the car off the floor.
* For added security place some support next to the jack
* Remove front wheel

If an M16 clamp-bolt is fitted through the hub (not required, but recommended):
* Attach a size 24 ring spanner to the back so it locks against the lower wishbone
* Put a rag between the spanner and the wishbone
* Use a breaker bar and size 24 socket to undo the M16 bolt
* Remove the bolt and washers, taking care not to mix up the washer types
* Clean the bolt and nut, treat with anti-corrosion

* Use pliers/clamp to push brake caliper pistons back (check reservoir!)
* Use 8mm key to undo allen-bolts holding caliper to upright
* Remove caliper and position on top of upper wishbone (may need to undo P-clip for brake line)

* Remove M5 allen bolt holding brake disc on hub
* Lift brake disc from hub

The hub and bearing pack are now visible and accessible. You will notice that there are pry slots on the outer edges of the bearing pack where it mounts to the upright.

* Disconnect speed sensor plug if required
* Turn steering completely to one side
* Depending on the type of bolt used, use a 19MM socket, 10MM allen head (or possibly E18 star socket, T55 torx head) and a breaker bar to undo the three bolts than hold the bearing pack to the upright
* Turn steering wheel straight again
* Use a chisel and lump hammer on the pry slots to separate the bearing from the upright (rust and dirt will make it 'stick')
* If you will not re-use the old bearing you can also hit the flange from the back with a lump hammer (this damages the bearing, so do not use this if re-using the bearing!)
* After several hits on the pry slots the bearing pack will fall out of the upright

The old bearing pack is now removed from the upright and the new one can be installed.

Installation
* Using some coarse sandpaper on a fabric backing (eg. grit 60-80) work on the opening of the upright where the bearing pack sits to remove all of the rust and dirt buildup
* Clean out the bolt holes
* Clean and de-grease surfaces properly so no grit and dirt is present anymore
* Apply some anti-seize (eg. ceramic grease) along the edge of the hole so the new bearing pack will seat properly and can be removed easier later.
* Offer up the new bearing pack to the upright
* Depending on tolerances it may slide into place immediately or need pulling in by using the bolts (this seems to vary)
* If the original bolts are OK, insert these from the back of the upright and tighten them finger-tight
* Turn steering wheel to one side again
* Using a torque wrench do up the bolts in a circular pattern until they are all tightened to 90Nm
* Check that the bearing pack sits flat and true on the upright

If an M16 clamp-bolt was fitted through the hub (not required, but recommended):
* Re-install clamp bolt and washers, coat washer surfaces with some form of anti-corrosion grease
* Attach a size 24 ring spanner to the back so it locks against the lower wishbone
* Put a rag between the spanner and the wishbone
* Use a torque wrench to tighten the M16 nut to 220Nm

* Re-connect speed sensor plug if required
* Clean brake disc inner mating surface to hub
* Install brake disc on hub
* Install M5 allen bolt holding brake disc on hub

* Install front caliper (may need to replace P-clip for brake line if undone earlier)
* Refit allen-bolts holding caliper to upright
* Use a torque wrench to tighten to 45Nm each
* Re-fit wheel
* Apply brake pedal a few times to re-seat brake pads/pistons

Have a cuppa!

Rear
Removal
* Apply handbrake and put car in 1st gear
* Undo the wheel bolts
* Jack up the car on the 'A' jacking point to raise the side of the car off the floor.
* For added security place some support next to the jack
* Remove rear wheel

* Remove split pin that secures castellated nut on driveshaft
* Use a breaker bar and deep size 30 socket or a size 30 ring spanner on the castellated nut and undo
* Remove the nut and washer
* Push the driveshaft into the hub to make sure it's free

* Release handbrake (keep car in gear!)
* Remove lock pin and spring from brake caliper
* Remove front pad by tapping it down and inboard
* Use 6mm key to undo lower allen-bolt holding caliper to upright
* Use 17mm socket to undo upper bolt holding caliper to upright
* Remove caliper and position on top of diffuser/undertray (may need to undo P-clip for brake line)

* Remove M5 allen bolt holding brake disc on hub
* Lift brake disc from hub

If the driveshaft was stuck in the bearing earlier, now a 3-prong bearing puller can be used to press the driveshaft out of the bearing.

The hub and bearing pack are now visible and accessible. You will notice that there are pry slots on the outer edges of the bearing pack where it mounts to the upright.

* Disconnect speed sensor plug if required
* Undo nut of outer trackrod joint to upright
* Disconnect trackrod taking care to note order and type of washers
* Swivel upright out carefully, making sure you do not pull the driveshaft from the CV joint
* Use 8mm allen key to undo the upper mounting plinth bolts that connect the balljoint to the upright
* Catch the camber shims that fall out and make note of the amount

Now the upright is only connected to the lower balljoint and can swivel relatively freely.

* Swivel and tilt the upright so the splined end of the driveshaft can be withdrawn from the bearing
* Move driveshaft out of the way and re-attach upper plinth temporarily
* Swivel upright to it's (more or less) perpendicular to car

Note from Scottish Scrutineer
I omitted disturbing the upright as described above as, once the driveshaft was relaesed from the splines, I was able to fit a slim socket onto the bolts securing the bearing pack to the upright.

* Depending on the type of bolt used, use a 19MM socket, 10MM allen head (or possibly E18 star socket, T55 torx head) and a breaker bar to undo the three bolts than hold the bearing pack to the upright
* Turn upright straight ahead

* Apply some anti-seize (eg. ceramic grease) along the edge of the hole so the new bearing pack will seat properly and can be removed easier later.
* Offer up the new bearing pack to the upright
* Depending on tolerances it may slide into place immediately or need pulling in by using the bolts (this seems to vary)
* If the original bolts are OK, insert these from the back of the upright and tighten them finger-tight
* Swivel upright to it's (more or less) perpendicular to car
* Using a torque wrench do up the bolts in a circular pattern until they are all tightened to 90Nm
* Check that the bearing pack sits flat and true on the upright

* Clean and de-grease the splined end of the driveshaft and make sure no dirt or grit is present
* Apply some anti-seize grease lightly to splines and mating surface of driveshaft
* Undo upper plinth bolts again
* Swivel and tilt the upright so the splined end of the driveshaft can be inserted into the bearing

* Re-fit camber shims and bolts holding upper mounting plinth to upright
* Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 45Nm (8.8 grade bolts) or 60Nm (10.9 or 12.9 grade bolts)

* Re-fit trackrod and washers
* Torque nut of outer trackrod joint to upright (OEM spec nut and balljoint 74Nm, aftermarket, see supplier docs)

* Re-connect speed sensor plug if required

* Push the driveshaft fully through the hub so it seats properly
* Install washer and castellated nut
* Use a torque wrench to tighten the castellated nut to 220Nm (if this turns the driveshaft/engine, wait until caliper re-fitted)
* Insert split pin that secures castellated nut on driveshaft and hammer ends over to secure it

* Clean brake disc inner mating surface to hub
* Install brake disc on hub
* Install M5 allen bolt holding brake disc on hub

* Push/screw brake caliper piston back
* Install caliper with inner pad in place (may need to replace P-clip for brake line if undone earlier)
* Refit allen-bolt and M10 bolt holding caliper to upright
* Use a torque wrench to tighten allen bolt to 28Nm and M10 to 45Nm
* Re-fit outer pad, spring and locking pin
* Apply brake pedal a few times to re-seat brake pads/pistons
* Apply handbrake
* If you were unable to set the correct torque on the center nut, try again now.
* Re-fit wheel

All Done!

You will need to purchase the escutcheons and spacers from Lotus.

To start you will need to protect the roll bar with masking tape. Using the two inverted semi circle escutcheons on the windscreen frame as a guide place masking tape on the roll bar cover in the corresponding positions. Cover the roll bar cover from the weather seal right down to the lower edge. This is more than you need but it gives you some room to write down some measurements. Make sure that you tuck the tape in under the lip of the rubber seal as you need to know precisely where the seal sits in relation to the actual roll bar.

With the roll bar protected with masking tape measure in from the inner most top corner of each cant rail locating bracket. The measurement is 230mm give or take. Mark a line vertically down at 230mm in from each cant rail on the masking tape. Place the outer edge of the spacer against the marked line. Whilst holding the spacer against the marked line mark the inner edge of the spacers. The spacers should be, give or take, 400mm apart (centre to centre). Each spacer should be roughly in line with the front roof rail sockets on the windscreen frame. The measurements are not critical as they tend to vary from car to car on the S2 Elise.

Once you have checked, rechecked and checked again mark the top edge of the spacer. It should sit 6mm below the edge of the rubber seal on the roll bar cover. Once you are satisfied with its position mark the "half moon" inner shape of the spacer on the masking tape. Dont forget it has to be inverted.

Check your measurements again.

Once you are satisfied that the spacer is in the right position you have to drill your first hole. You are better off using a slow start cordless drill or a dremel. Start with small drill bits and carefully drill out the half moon. Keep in from the line.You can always make the hole larger, you might struggle to make it smaller !

With a series of holes drilled use a slightly larger drill bit to open the holes out until the rough shape is achieved.

Work slowly and shape the hole until the escutcheon pushes in with a slight interference fit.

Be extremely careful opening out the hole as there is a drainage channel immediatley behind where you are working. You don't want to breach that.

Its best also to open the hole with your dremmel parallel to the ground as the edges of the hole need to be slightly bevelled. Look at the escutcheon and its obvious why.

Working slowly will also prevent damage to the gel coat and paint.

Once the escutcheon fits remove the tape and use glue or silicone sealant to fix the spacer and escutcheon into place. Using the roof bars will help to hold them in whilst the glue sets.

The position of the holes is not critical. What I mean by this is that before committing and cutting the holes I measured 3 or 4 other S2's. The measurements between all cars varied by 1mm or so. Basically they should be in line with the front holes and at a height that allow the top edge of the roof spar to sit at roughly the same height as the top of the roll bar cover.

It is a straight forward job if you have the balls to take a drill bit to your rear clam.

I will post some pictures in due course

Since the S2 steering adaptor and snap-off boss kit installation instructions are not straightforward I'll share my findings (hbaumhardt) for posterity (from a 2003 UK S2 Elise);

1. Straighten steering wheel and try and chock the front wheels to avoid movement.

2. Remove the steering wheel centre pad (simply pulls off) and disconnect horn spade connectors

3. Push back (using a flat blade screwdriver) the locking tabs on the steering column 22mm nut.

4. Put a dot of tipex or the like on the inside top of the splined shaft incase you knock or turn it with the wheel off and lose TDC

5. Undo the 22mm nut (may need deep reach socket) but leave on the last 3 threads of the steering column to avoid getting the wheel in your face when it pops off.

6A. Using a 2 prong puller slide thin jaws in to the oval holes on the back face of the wheel sideways on then rotate them to face inwards, connect to the puller body and pop the wheel off the splined shaft.

6B. if you dont have a puller its a 2 person job. One pulls on the steering wheel and the other taps the centre spline with a hammer.

7. Unscrew the 22mm nut don’t let the spring or lock plate sproing off into hyperspace and careful not to rotate the shaft and loose straight ahead.

8. Once the steering wheel is removed from the splined shaft turn it over and pop off the horn contact plate / slip ring.

9. You will see 4 x M6 hex headed bolts holding the centre hub to the Lotus steering wheel, remove these 4 bolts and the steering wheel detaches.

10. Attach the 20mm Eliseparts/Eliseshop ("EP/ES") adaptor to the centre hub using the 4 x M6 hex headed bolts you removed, pop the horn slip ring back on and feed the wire back through if you need to.

10A. If you have a boss kit where the black negative contact is isolated you may need to make up a wire with a spade crimp on one end and a ring crimp the other and file down to sit under one of he the M6 bolts and run the wire up through one of the oval holes on the back plate.

11. Play around with the EP/ES adaptor -> snapoff back plate -> snapoff main body orientation to make sure the holes align as the EP adaptor has several offsets to choose from.

12. Slide the joined EP/ES adaptor and centre hub onto the splined shaft then put the metal lock plate and 22mm nut and tighten to 20lbft (may need a rubber band wrench to hold the column still).

13. Connect the positive wire from the slip ring to the positive on the snap off back plate. Double check negative is earthing - the wire on some kits is isolated and there is no where to attach the connector as in step 10A. As a temporary fix you could just jam the spade between the mating faces of the EP/ES adaptor and the snapoff back plate but this is NOT RECOMMENDED.

14. Bolt the snap off backing plate to the EP/ES adaptor using 6 countersunk M6 hex screws.

15. Bolt the thin lipped adaptor to the main snap off body using 6 countersunk M6 hex screws lip out to locate the steering wheel.

16. Attach the main body and lipped adaptor to the steering wheel using M5 countersunk hex screws.

17. Connect the horn wiring leads and pop the horn button in (You will not need the silver lipped momo horn adaptor plate).

18. The steering wheel now snaps on to the adaptor.

Should take 30 mins and life is good :up

The order of parts;

* Splined Shaft
* Horn positive contact plate/slip ring
* Original centre hub & 4 M6 screws from the EP/ES adaptor
* Original spring. Locking plate & 22mm nut
* Snap off back plate & 6 M6 screws
* Main Snap off body (wires to front)
* Thin lipped black adaptor & 6 M6 screws
* Steering Wheel & 6 M5 screws
* Horn Button

The non standard equipment you may need;

* 22mm deep socket
* Rubber band wrench
* 2 thin leg puller

Head gasket failure

Head Gasket Failure, or HGF, is all too common on the Rover ‘K’ series engine. What happens is the head gasket, which sits between the engine block and cylinder head, fails, allowing pathways between the firing area and cooling system to form. A more detailed explanation can be found here.

Original designs of the were held in place by dowels that allowed minute movement of the gasket. Later gaskets are held in place by steel dowels, which do not allow movement of the gasket.
clr

Symptoms
Signs of HGF tend to include oil in the coolant expansion bottle, or oil becoming emulsified where the coolant from the coolant ways seeps through the gasket into oil. This can normally be seen as a mayonnaise like substance inside the oil filler cap or the engine oil dipstick.

* Oil in coolant expansion bottle.
* Brown layer of foam floating on the coolant.
* Mayonnaise type substance on the oil filler cap/dipstick.
* Steam from the exhaust pipe.
* Erratic temp readings on the stack display.
* Blown radiator.

Handling
If you suspect HGF, do not drive the car and have it checked by a reputable garage. This can include checking the coolant for hydrocarbons to see if oil/gases have escaped past the gasket into the coolant ways. If the engine has overheated and the cylinder head has become warped, then the head will need to be skimmed so that it can be reseated onto a new gasket at a later date.

There is plenty of information about HG repalcement here, but a few points to note if you want it to last

i) the head should be hardness tested and be more than 95 Brinell

ii) the head should be peened on the fire ring area to eradicate porosity followed by a skim

iii) the liner heights should be checked and if they are lower then 4 thou they should be corrected

iv) a Payen BW750 gasket or if you must an MLS Payen BW5750 gasket should be used.

Get these right and the fix will last.

Treatment
Does the head need skimming?
Fit new head gasket.

Precautions
Certain precautions can be taken to help alleviate the problem of HGF. These include
* Always check the coolant level.
* Hoses for damage and jubilee clips for tightness.
* Warming the engine up gradually from cold may also be beneficial.
* Fit a remote stat.
* Upgrade the head gasket.
* Install the new type oil ladder combined with the multi layer head gasket
