There is a brake overhaul kit for the rear calipers. Applicable at least to 1997 cars and probably later. This is the brake seals and the slider seals. Instructions with the kit. Remember to remove the grub screw before trying to remove the pistons!

Replacing the hand brake cable currently (Apr 2026) requires an additional part.  This is for part B111J0024F, which is (I understand) the same as used in S2's.  The S1 rear brakes are slightly nearer so the cable adjustment is at best at the maximum.  The cable diameter is approximately 3.5mm and a cable clamp is need to be attached before the final cable ferrule cap shortening the distance.  A 4mm one called 'Stainless Steel Wire Rope End Stop Clamp Ring' (as described from [https://www.gsproducts.co.uk/wire-rope-end-stopper/ GS products marine suppliers]) works well.  Ensure you add it after the cable is fully fitted otherwise you will be undoing it (ask me how I know!).  Once the cable is fully fitted, use a bit of the cable slack to pull the cable further out, attached the clamp, and that will now be in between the end cap and the handbrake lever on the caliper.  It may be you can do on on each side and the the adjuster is more in the middle of its travel, I attached afterwards and a single one on one side moved the handbrake from maximum clicks to 3/4 clicks with the adjuster left near the maximum.

Early Elise S1 MMC disc

The Brakes on the Elise utilises disc brakes all round. The system comprises of brake pads, brake discs and brake hoses. There are many better brake products on the market than the OEM fitment, and at a more resonable price.

Useful background info on brake systems and technology can be found at Brake Bible pages.

The first production of Elise S1's had Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) discs as standard. This was an Aluminium-Ceramic composite which required specialist pads.

MMC brake discs look dull grey in colour and do not suffer from the normal red/brown rust that covers steel disks.

If you have the older MMC discs you have not option but to buy the special MMC pads from your local dealer. Using pads designed for steel discs on MMC discs will destroy them in a very few miles, despite this fact some dealers will, somewhat unbelievably, allow you to spec steel based pads for MMC discs, make sure YOU know.

There is a brake overhaul kit for the rear calipers. Applicable at least to 1998 cars and probably later. This is the brake seals and the slider seals. Instructions with the kit. Remember to remove the grub screw before trying to remove the pistons!

The company that manufactures the kit is called Autofren and the Kit no is D4291 from a Renault Laguna 1 1997 with ABS.

A 4mm one called 'Stainless Steel Wire Rope End Stop Clamp Ring' (as described from GS products marine suppliers) works well.
